Enepaq VTC6 Sony/Murata Li-ion Battery Modules: Engineered for Efficiency

While cylindrical cells offer superior quality and safety, Enepaq recognizes the challenges they pose for large battery pack assembly. That’s why Enepaq battery modules are specifically designed to address these issues:

  • Modular Design: Enepaq modules integrate cylindrical cells within a pre-engineered format, eliminating the need for custom trays and simplifying battery pack design.
  • Simplified Connections: Enepaq modules are specifically designed for easy connections. No engineering expertise is required! Simply assemble them using busbars and bolt kits – no welding or additional wiring necessary.
  • Scalable and Efficient Assembly: Enepaq modules allow for faster and more efficient assembly of large battery packs due to their pre-configured format and simplified connections.
  • Specific design based on air cooling: Enepaq battery modules utilize strategically placed air gaps within the housing to facilitate superior thermal management. This innovative design leverages air circulation to effectively dissipate heat generated by the battery cells, maintaining optimal operating temperatures for the entire pack.
  • Integrated temperature sensors: Enepaq modules are with JST 2 pin-XH connection on each module (you can connect the modules with the custom-made device, that can read module temp data and provide it to your BMS unit)
  • Fuse Control: Protects cells from overload and potential fire.

Enepaq Battery Module: Advanced Temperature Monitoring System

Ensuring Battery Safety and Performance

Enepaq battery modules feature a built-in temperature sensor system that surpasses the safety requirements of FSAE (Formula Electric SAE) 2017 regulations. This innovative system provides several key benefits:

  • Comprehensive Cell Monitoring: Each module sensor is in direct contact with the negative pole of two adjacent cells, enabling 100% cell temperature monitoring (exceeding the FSAE minimum requirement of 30%).
  • Fast Response Time: The physical contact ensures a rapid response to temperature changes, allowing for quick detection of potential thermal issues.
  • Cost-Effective Solution: This ingenious design offers complete cell monitoring at a competitive price point.
  • Hotspot Detection: An innovative analog signal OR’ing technique combines all sensor signals into a single two-wire acquisition system. This system functions as a hotspot detector, reporting only the maximum temperature within the module.
  • Normal Operation Monitoring: When the battery operates within safe limits, all sensors register similar temperatures, providing an accurate representation of the overall module temperature.
  • Simplified Integration: The sensor functions as a temperature-dependent voltage shunt reference, similar to a zener diode. It requires a simple 680Ω pull-up resistor for operation at cell voltage level. The module can even power the sensor for your convenience.

Superior Safety and Performance:

Enepaq’s advanced temperature monitoring system offers peace of mind by ensuring the safety and optimal performance of your battery pack. This comprehensive and efficient solution allows for early detection of thermal issues and helps prevent potential failures.

Quality

With a long history and well-established manufacturing techniques, these cells boast very high quality and an incredibly low failure rate of only 0.01 per million, crucial when building a battery pack from thousands of cells. The stable manufacturing process ensures high tolerances and low parameter deviation. Typically, cells show less than 3mV of voltage difference even after years in storage, requiring minimal maintenance and balancing. This allows the use of cost-effective and reliable battery management systems with low balancing current. All Battery Modules are perfectly balanced upon delivery, unlike poor-quality cells that may require weeks or months for initial balancing and special equipment for conditioning.

Flexibility

These building blocks enable quick and easy battery pack configuration. Modules can be connected in series and parallel using bolt connections, allowing even MWh-scale batteries to be assembled with ease.

Enepaq battery modules integrated temperature sensor is designed to be galvanically isolated from cell terminals, ensuring safe signal reading with a separate circuit. However, for convenience, a standard stack measurement IC, typically used for battery monitoring and balancing, can be employed. An example circuit utilizing the widely available LTC6803 IC is shown in Figure 6 (refer to datasheet).

Measurement Process

To measure temperature:

  1. Activate Balancing Switch: The balancing switch on the IC is activated.
  2. Voltage Difference: The voltage difference between Cn+1 and Cn represents the temperature.
  3. Current Flow: During measurement, the sensor current flows from the cell positive tab through a series resistor to the sensor, then to the internal balancing FET of the IC, and finally to the cell negative via another series resistor.
  4. Resistor Configuration: Two 330Ω resistors form a total of 680Ω resistance for the sensor.

Important Considerations

  • Cell Voltage Measurement: When the switch is disabled, the cell voltage can be measured.
  • Capacitor Addition: Exercise caution when adding capacitors for filtered measurement to avoid overcurrent conditions in the sensor.
  • Balancing Switches: Adjacent balancing switches must not be enabled simultaneously to prevent overcurrent conditions.
  • Measurement Cycles: If using this technique, conduct measurements in two cycles, alternating cells (e.g., cells 1, 3, and 5 in one cycle, then cells 2, 4, and 6 in the next).

Recommendations

  • Separate ICs: It is recommended to use separate ICs for battery management and temperature measurement.
  • Single IC Use: With careful engineering, a single IC can be used for cell voltage measurement, temperature measurement, and balancing. This can be achieved by bleeding the cells during temperature measurement, provided an additional bleed resistor and MOSFET are added.

By following these guidelines, the temperature sensor can be effectively integrated into the battery management system, ensuring accurate and reliable temperature monitoring.
